Eno-Versity Highlights the Parallels Between Wines and Fragrances

Guests will enjoy an evening of fine wine and fragrances at CHANEL Eno-Versity, Friday, April 6, 2012 at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel. The exclusive Eno-Versity class will define the parallels between factors influencing the creation of unique fragrances and fine wines. CHANEL will highlight select fragrances and share key pieces of information with guests, helping them to understand their olfactory sense of style.

Guests will discover the fragrance that compliments their persona and style based on which individual characteristics and family of aromas they are most attracted to. This will be tied in directly to the similarities of the relationship between a person and their preferred wine style. The nose, or olfactory sense, is the most important tool in not only smelling a wine, but in tasting it. Guests will learn to use this sense to smell and then taste the specific characteristics of each wine.

CHANEL Eno-Versity will be held in Eno starting at 6 p.m. and is $45 per person. Guests can register for Eno-Versity by calling Resort Services at 949-240-2000.

JoAnne Artman Gallery, Presents in the Main Gallery: “Girls, Girls, Girls” | New Works by Belgium-Born Artist Anja Van Herle

April 5, 2012 – May 31, 2012

Opening Reception: April 5, 2012 from 6 - 9 p.m. to coincide with Laguna Beach ArtWalk. Please RSVP: 949-510-5481 by April 1, 2012.

Girls, Girls, Girls
Alluring, Classic, Emotive and Striking.

Anja Van Herle specializes in large-scale portraiture featuring beautifully expressive women with a powerfully enticing presence. Anja’s “Girls” originate from the combination of working with models and pure whimsical fantasy, creating women of tangible imagination: beauty that is both born and bred.

Born in Belgium in 1969, Anja Van Herle combines a European sense of high fashion in her artwork with an American sense of wonder. Her childhood years were devoted to exploring the fundamentals of her art using crayons, pencils and watercolors. In 1987, she enrolled in Belgium’s Higher Institute for Art Education where she earned a Master’s of Fine Arts in Painting. In 2003, Anja relocated to Los Angeles, where she now concentrates on figurative paintings that are inspired by both classic and contemporary fashion while exploring issues of identity, emotion and human interrelationships. As timelessly chic as Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Anja’s women are playfully sexy, and their expressions and eyes tell stories that go far beyond the simple exhibition of fine fashion.

“My work is an attempt to capture the complexity of emotions that are conveyed in the human face. I’ve been painting portraits since I was a child, continually drawing closer to the face and eyes in order to explore the emotions they contain. There’s a story behind every face; my paintings are an attempt to tell these stories by capturing delicate facial expressions and juxtaposing them with vibrant color and the dramatic interplay of shadow and light that both inform my subjects and maintain their enigmatic aura. I’m constantly delighted by the various interpretations my work receives. For some, a subject may be pensive, while to others it may be seductive or confrontational. Part of the viewing experience is for a viewer to attach his or her own emotional meaning to a work,” Anja Van Herle.

Maro Wood Grill
1915 S. Coast Hwy., Laguna Beach, CA 92651

Maro Wood Grill brings another Argentinean culinary tradition to Laguna Beach locals: “Ñoquis del 29”- Gnocchis of the 29th. Every 29th of the month Argentinean’s prepare at home Ñoquis in the company of friends and family. Ñoquis are also part of the daily menu in restaurants across the country. Maro will serve Ñoquis every 29th of the month respecting all parts of the tradition!

Backstory:
Some believe that the tradition of serving Ñoquis on the 29th is from a legend that goes back to the VIII century. Then lived in Nicosia (Greater Asia), a young doctor named Pantaleon, who, after converting to Christianity, traveled through northern Italy. He performed miraculous cures for which he was canonized. Once when asked Venetian farmers for some bread, they invited him to share their poor table. Grateful, Pantaleon announced an excellent year of fishing and crops. The prophecy was fulfilled and many other miracles. St. Pantaleon was consecrated, on par with San Marcos-Patron of Venice. This episode occurred at a 29th, therefore it is remembered that day with a simple meal represented by the gnocchi. The accompanying ritual of putting money under the plate symbolizes the desire for new gifts. It is customary to leave a money under the plate for (a thought of “contagious magic”) in this way to attract luck and prosperity to the diner.

Others, say it was a group of housewives in the 1970’s that made the tradition widespread. A way to celebrate an otherwise dreary time of the month for most households the last days of the month before pay day, when money runs short.

“Regardless of the origin,” says owner Maro Molteni, “the important part of the tradition is to enjoy the food, the place and the company.” “ ...and don’t forget to check under the plate…”

The focus on local and regional cuisine has never been more important and, in March, Chef Jimenez creates a menu utilizing only ingredients harvested, picked or raised within 250 miles of the resort. Guests will also learn about what ingredients are available within the region and how they can be turned into an amazing menu.

Thursday, April 19 – Mushrooms, Mushrooms, Mushrooms
Few ingredients are as versatile as the mushroom. Mushrooms are low in calories, fat-free, cholesterol-free and very low in sodium and, can also be featured as a dessert. In April, Chef Jimenez presents four wild mushrooms expertly prepared four different ways. A must eat experience.

Thursday June 28 – A Sneak Peak of Summer
June 20 is the first official day of summer. Chefs Jimenez and his team prepare a Chef’s Table that offers a sneak peak on the benefits of additional sunlight. Experience dishes from the year’s best season (in the Chef’s opinion) for fresh, healthy, light produce and ingredients that will tempt the pallet all summer long.

Ex·u·ber·ance ( g-z b r- ns): An overflowing amount; an outburst; an abundance! All describe the works of America Martin! We are pleased to announce America’s third solo exhibition with amazing new works of pure joy!

America Martin is a Colombian-American fine artist based in Los Angeles. She is a traveler between mediums, insouciant in the conquest of new terrain. Martin’s favorite landscape is that of the human form, her work is distinguished by a command of line and color, making playful reference to both classic and indigenous art forms.

About her work, America says, “The artist cannot be idle. It is only duty, love and discipline that make art. Inspiration exists, but it has to find us working. The artist is gluttonous, constantly devouring life in order to translate all that she sees, smells, lives or breathes into her own language. Why, and for what? For the blistering personal joy that comes when one is doing something of and about truth. There is no choosing this life. An artist paints because she must,” America Martin.
America’s art reflects influences of Cubism, Fauvism and Minimalism. With these combining forces she creates fresh, colorful palettes radiating with soft, subdued colors. Her use of thick, continuous lines with flat, two-dimensional forms in single picture planes are reminiscent of Picasso’s early cubist works, dating 1906-1909, shaping canvases with a soft Cubist manner. America’s arrangement of geometric shapes and figures mirrors the conceptual desires of the Minimalist movement, as seen in artists such as Frank Stella, including cubic forms lacking repetition and equality. Another underlying inspiration found amongst her pieces is that of the school of Fauvism. Concentrated colors painted over landscapes of distorted forms of rudimentary subject matter equate to that of the early 20th century “Wild Beast” artists that embraced a poetic, yet quiet energy. America Martin’s work will inspire, provoke, engage and mesmerize.

The Gallery is open Wednesdays-Sundays from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., and by appointment. Visit the first Thursday from 6 - 9 p.m. of any month to coincide with the Laguna Beach Art Walk. Street parking is available directly in front of the Gallery as well as the Downtown Parking structure located at Glenneyre Street. Take a stroll through the galleries and studios. See art come alive in North Laguna!

Bridge Hall
Neighborhood Congregational Church
340 St. Ann’s Drive, Laguna Beach

Our first movie night in December was a great success, with over 70 people in attendance, and we’re continuing the series this month with a presentation of “How to Boil A Frog.”

The film’s a comedic documentary about “Overshoot”, defined as too many people using up too little planet much too fast. The movie will give you the Big Picture of what’s is going on with our so-called civilization, and tells you what we can do about it, that will not only actually make a difference (no light bulbs!) but also make our lives better right now.

“How to Boil a Frog” is especially useful for people struggling with paralyzing guilt, despair and/or ignorance over the state of the environment. “If you believe you can make a difference, you can; if you don’t believe you can’t make a difference, you can’t.”

One interesting effect of deciding to act is that citizens come together in cooperative ways to fight for their communities—and the can make a lot of friends, (just as we do in Transition Laguna.) Rare in our society where competition and the acquisition of private property and goods are more valued than our relationships with each other….

Come by early with a dish for the vegetarian potluck at 6:00 p.m. The film will be screened at 7:00 p.m. $5 donation suggested.
